Gord is right..... Print E-mail

What Gord has to say is right..... despite my letter writing campaign  I  am as guilty as everyone else. I went to the Chevron today to pick up a paper when I could just have easily stopped at the 99 Mile Market.  I have stopped buying fuel in 100 Mile House as I work in Williams Lake also.  We had to drive up there this weekend so my husband was able to fill up his diesel truck at 12 cents a litre less than what 100 Mile House is charging.  I got a reply, of sorts, from Chevron Canada regarding my enquiry of how the prices are set at the local retail stations.  I haven't attached it because it is too long and says absolutely nothing.  It was a long, obvious form letter, educating me about the relationship between supply and demand and the price of crude, how much money Chevron is spending on new exploration and research in to alternative fuels and blah blah blah.  Oh, then they were nice enough to give me tips on how to conserve fuel.  They did not address my actual question at all.  Surprise, surprise.  I sent them an email back but frankly I don't expect to hear from them again.  I pledge to not go to the Chevron, or any orther gas station for that matter, to buy miscallaneous items again.  I know for a fact that most of their profit is from the store portion of the businiess.

What everyone in 100 Mile must remember is that the consumer is part of the problem when it comes to high gas prices.  We complain about it but thats all we do and the companies know they can get away with it.  If there was a plan and we could get the majority of consumers together, the price would go down fast.  First lets examine the problem.  We don't like the high prices but at the same time we don't change our habits.  We still go and fuel up at the same places and while we are in paying for our gas we also buy our smokes, lotto tickets, snacks and pop.  All of these extras are bought at inflated prices at these service stations and all can be bought somewhere else cheaper. So what can we as consumers do to convince the owners to reconsider the rip off.  Here are 2 suggestions

1.  Go and buy the fuel you need but buy absolutely nothing else. There is a reason they have all that other stuff there..... it is good money.  If you want to buy snacks and pop or anything else but don't want to wait in a grocery store line up, try the store at 99 Mile. These is lots of selection, its cheaper and has relatively easy access (no big parking lot and no I don't work there). Don't give them any more of your hard earned money on top of the high fuel prices. In fact go somewhere else and save money.

2.  Try to convince everyone you know to fuel up only at the smaller company names. For instance, if everyone filled up only at the Husky and Super Save stations, I suspect it wouldn't take long for Chevron and 7-Eleven to start dropping the prices to get their customers back. Divide and conquer!!! Let them sweat for 2 weeks and have them spend all those profits from high prices just to survive.

As I said, the problem is getting a lot of consumers to buy into the plan. I suspect it will never happen because we as humans are also creatures of habit. I think if people were to follow the two points listed above for 2 weeks we may actually see newspaper headlines like "Hundred Mile has cheapest gas prices" (yeah right!!).  In any case, either do something or stop complaining.  Like a previous comment by Adrian, I work in Williams Lake so my only concern is having enough fuel to get home and back to WL to fuel up.

I got the same response from Chevron. You would think that a local supplier , faced with a ton of complaints, would be able to call his regional manager and tell him/her that they are losing business. But I think that they just dont care. My take on this is that the oil companies see 100 Mile House as a "drive-thru" town and that people need to buy fuel here no matter what the cost. Which is exactly why this town needs to do something about the price. Do we want people to stop here or not?
I make a point of being very vocal about the price here and telling people its much cheaper to the north. If I have to, I will put in $10 worth so I can get to 150 Mile and then fuel up there (I work near Likely so Im lucky that way).
I went in Chevron the other day and handed the lady a $100 bill and asked for $10 worth of fuel. She laughed at me and asked me if I was serious. I said I was and that she didnt want the long answer. The fellow behind me asked what the long answer was, and when I told him how much cheaper it was in 150, he left without buying any fuel.
I see we are down to 82.9 on gas and 108.9 on diesel. Big deal, we are still amongst the highest in Canada. Tofino, Prince Rupert, Dawson Creek, Ft Macmurray are all cheaper.
